The neighborhood called Centro is the real historical center of the city and the heart of the pulsating life, with its beautiful squares and pedestrian streets rich in shops. Piazza San Carlo, the salon of Turin, from 1618 dedicated to St. Charles Borromeo, is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and important squares of the city and it often is the scene of concerts, exhibitions and social and cultural events. It is not only its beauty to make Piazza San Carlo so famous, but above all the important social role it played since the origin: on the square there are several old cafes, where intellectuals and men of culture, but also noble and real, used to meet. Piazza Castello, with the monumental Palazzo Madama and the complex of the Royal Palace, declared Unesco World Heritage Site as the other Savoy residences, preserves the witness of the original period of the city: you can still see the polygonal towers of the medieval gate incorporated in Palazzo Madama. In the large “portico” that surrounds the square there are two of the most characteristic historical cafes of Turin, Mulassano and Baratti & Milano; a few steps away, the beautiful Piazza Carignano, with the palace home of the first Italian Parliament, the theater and the famous Ristorante Del Cambio, frequented by Cavour. Via Carlo Alberto and Via Lagrange, with a particular Parisian flavor, offer the most beautiful shops of the center, while Via Po leads to the river along a row of beautiful “porticato”. The neighborhood is very lively during the day, full of tourists and people from Turin. In the evening you can taste the typical local dishes in the numerous restaurants and stroll through the lighted streets of the city center while enjoying an ice cream in the summer or a Moroccan in the winter, but also move to the nearby neighborhood of San Salvario (just 5 minutes walk), one of the Turin nightlife destinations.
